Meta, formerly Facebook, started a trial program enabling a handful of creators to charge for what they are building for Horizon Worlds, the firm’s metaverse platform.

- Meta will work with a handful of creators under a test program that will enable them to “experiment with different ways to monetize” virtual items and effects within Horizon Worlds, the company said in a statement Monday.
- The tools “are steps toward our long-term vision for the metaverse where creators can earn a living and people can purchase digital goods, services, and experiences,” Meta said.
- Examples may include the ability to sell “attachable accessories for a fashion world or offer paid access to a new part of a world,” Meta said.
- Users of Meta’s Horizon Worlds, currently only available in Canada and the U.S., are able to make purchases if they are 18 and older.
- The company is expanding further on the US$10 million Horizon Creators Fund it announced last October, which was used to provide resources to Horizon Worlds creators.
