A university in Paraguay has announced that it will begin accepting cryptocurrency as payment for tuition starting from August.

- The Universidad Americana, whose campus is in the South American nation’s capital, Asunción, will initially accept Bitcoin and Ethereum, starting on August 1.
- The university’s announcement comes after congressman Carlos Rejala said that on July 14 a bill would be presented to allow the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment, according to a Spanish-language report by BeInCrypto.com. It also follows moves by El Salvador and Panama to bring cryptos into the day-to-day economy.
- According to BeInCrypto.com, the Universidad Americana’s move will bring the number of higher education institutions around the world that accept cryptocurrencies to eight. The other seven are:
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (U.S.)
- Pompeu Fabra University (Spain)
- Simon Fraser University (Canada)
- The University of Cumbria (UK)
- The University of Nicosia (Cyprus)
- ESMT Berlin (Germany)
- The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Switzerland)
