Tokenized Deposits
Tokenized deposits are digital representations of traditional bank deposits recorded on a blockchain or distributed ledger. Each token functions as a direct liability of the issuing regulated commercial bank, representing a 1:1 claim on fiat currency held within that institution. Unlike new forms of digital currency, tokenized deposits do not create a new money supply; instead, they digitize existing deposits already present on a bank's balance sheet, thereby maintaining the integrity and regulatory framework of the traditional banking credit system.

These assets are issued exclusively by regulated, licensed depository institutions. While they often operate within private, permissioned blockchain systems to ensure security and compliance, some implementations utilize public networks. Transactions are account-based and authorized by the issuing bank, using smart contracts—self-executing code on a blockchain—to enable automated treasury operations, conditional payments, and atomic settlement (where the exchange of assets and payment occurs simultaneously). This architecture facilitates instant, 24/7 settlement between authorized counterparties, bypassing the multi-day clearing cycles inherent in legacy banking infrastructure.
Tokenized Deposits vs. Stablecoins
Tokenized deposits are sometimes confused with stablecoins, but they operate on fundamentally different premises. Stablecoins are bearer instruments issued by non-bank entities on public blockchains; they circulate independently of the issuer and generally lack FDIC insurance. Tokenized deposits, by contrast, remain direct liabilities of a regulated bank, are subject to comprehensive banking regulation, and are eligible for FDIC deposit insurance up to $250,000 per depositor per ownership category. Put simply: stablecoins operate outside the banking system and can siphon deposits away from banks, while tokenized deposits keep money inside the regulated banking perimeter and preserve the bank-customer relationship.
Distinctions: CBDCs and Deposit Tokens
Tokenized deposits also differ from Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and deposit tokens. CBDCs represent direct liabilities of a central bank, whereas tokenized deposits are liabilities of commercial banks. The terms “tokenized bank deposit” and “deposit token” are often used interchangeably, but a technical difference exists: a tokenized bank deposit is a digital representation settled off-chain via the bank’s internal ledger, while a deposit token is a native on-chain token settled directly on a blockchain, potentially allowing for transferability across different banks within a consortium.
Real-World Examples
Major financial institutions are actively integrating tokenized deposits into their infrastructure, moving from initial proofs-of-concept toward broader adoption:
- JPMorgan: The bank developed its JPMD deposit token, testing it with partners including B2C2, Coinbase, and Mastercard to enable near-instant peer-to-peer transfers and yield-bearing commercial bank money on-chain.
- BNY Mellon: The firm extended its digital cash capabilities for institutional clients, collaborating with Ripple Prime as an early adopter for institutional collateral and margin workflows on its private, permissioned blockchain.
- Wells Fargo: The bank initiated a pilot program for cross-border USD-to-GBP payments for corporate and commercial clients, with the capability to integrate with The Clearing House’s shared network as well as private networks.
- The Clearing House: A consortium of 17 major banks—including Bank of America, BMO, BNY, Citi, Citizens, Fifth Third, HSBC, Huntington, J.P. Regulatory Framework
Tokenized deposits operate under existing banking laws, including consumer protection, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) requirements. The FDIC clarified in its 2025 guidance that supervised institutions may engage in tokenized deposit initiatives without prior approval, rescinding previous guidance. Furthermore, the GENIUS Act established that tokenized deposits meeting the statutory definition of a “deposit” receive the same FDIC insurance treatment as traditional bank deposits.
Use Cases
Key use cases include 24/7 real-time cross-border payments, the settlement of tokenized securities and real-world assets (RWAs), and programmable B2B payments and treasury management. By enabling atomic settlement on shared ledgers, these tokens allow institutions to conduct on-chain finance without exiting the regulated banking system.
Why It Matters
Tokenized deposits are currently in various stages of pilot and limited production, but momentum is accelerating. The Clearing House consortium of 17 major banks signals that the US banking industry is treating tokenized deposits as infrastructure-level technology, not an experiment.
