Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a stable value by pegging to an external reference asset, most commonly the U.S. dollar. They combine the price stability of cash with the speed, security, and programmability of blockchain technology, serving as the native currency for crypto trading, cross-border payments, and AI agent commerce.

Stablecoins are a unique class of cryptocurrencies engineered to maintain a consistent value by being pegged—or tied—to an external reference asset, most commonly the U.S. dollar. While traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are known for their price volatility, stablecoins aim to combine the stability of cash with the speed, security, and programmability of blockchain technology.
Think of a stablecoin like a digital voucher. Just as a coat check ticket represents your physical coat, a stablecoin represents a specific amount of value held in reserve. Because they are built on blockchain networks, they can be moved globally in seconds or minutes, rather than the days often required by traditional banking systems.
The Four Main Types
There are four primary ways these assets maintain their value:
- Fiat-backed: These are the most common, where the issuer holds actual cash or short-term government debt as collateral. Examples include USDC and USDT.
- Commodity-backed: These are pegged to physical assets, such as gold.
- Crypto-backed: These use other cryptocurrencies as collateral, managed by automated systems. DAI is a prominent example.
- Algorithmic: These rely on computer code and market incentives to balance supply and demand without traditional collateral.
Why They Matter
Stablecoins serve as the backbone for many modern financial activities. They are essential for crypto trading, allowing users to move between assets without exiting the digital ecosystem. They also facilitate cross-border payments, enable participation in DeFi (decentralized finance), and act as a reliable store of value for those looking to hedge against market volatility.
In the United States, the GENIUS Act provides a federal framework for these assets. It mandates that payment stablecoins must be backed 1:1 by U.S. dollars or short-term Treasuries, ensuring that only authorized entities—known as Permitted Payment Stablecoin Issuers—can issue them. This regulatory oversight is designed to bring clarity and safety to the market.
The Agentic Economy
Looking ahead, stablecoins are becoming the native currency of the emerging machine economy. They enable programmable money workflows, allowing AI agents to conduct autonomous negotiations and financial settlements. By removing human friction from the process, stablecoins are transforming how value moves across the internet.
Key Risks
Despite their utility, stablecoins carry inherent risks. The most significant is depegging, which occurs if the coin loses its 1:1 relationship with the reference asset. Users should also be aware of counterparty risk—the possibility that the issuer fails to hold the promised reserves—and the fact that these assets are generally not covered by traditional protections like FDIC or SIPC insurance.
