These devices promise to turn your living room into a command center powered by local AI, boasting everything from massive storage to semantic understanding. It sounds impressive on a spec sheet, but it feels entirely disconnected from the actual friction of managing a modern household.
While companies are busy shipping complex, high-performance hardware, the people living in these smart homes are still struggling with the basics. According to Horowitz Research, 32% of smart homeowners find their current devices confusing to set up or use. They aren’t asking for a 2,070 TFLOPS Nvidia Jetson-powered brain to manage their lights; they are asking for a centralized view of their existing devices, which 50% of users say they want, and better technical support for troubleshooting, which 53% of users are actively seeking. The industry is obsessed with the next big AI gadget, ignoring the fact that the foundation of the smart home is still cracked.
The product reality check is sobering. The Anker MindBase has no announced US price. The Ugreen HomeAgent is launching on Kickstarter with a price range of $899 to $9,999, and the LG ThinQ Claw has no disclosed US availability. Meanwhile, the US market is hitting a regulatory wall. The FCC recently added several major robotic device manufacturers to its Covered List, effectively blocking new models from companies like Eufy, Roborock, and Ecovacs from receiving equipment authorization. If you were hoping for a seamless upgrade, the regulatory landscape suggests otherwise.
Then there is the trust gap. IFA Berlin’s own consumer research found that 41% of consumers cite privacy as a top barrier to adoption. This is particularly relevant given the history of brands like Eufy, which previously faced scrutiny over its encryption claims. When you ask consumers to bring a powerful, always-on AI hub into their homes, you are asking for a significant leap of faith. For many, the tension between cloud-based convenience and local-AI privacy remains unresolved, and a shiny new hub doesn’t automatically fix that.
The actual consumer ask is far simpler than the complex, expensive hardware currently being pushed. People want reliability, simplicity, and a unified experience. They want their devices to work together without needing a degree in network engineering or a subscription service to keep the lights on. We are being sold a future of autonomous agents, but most of us just want our existing smart plugs to stop disconnecting.
As a counter-signal to this hardware-heavy approach, the Open Home Foundation was at IFA showcasing Home Assistant with support for Matter 1.6. This represents a privacy-first, open-source alternative that focuses on interoperability rather than proprietary AI silos. It is a reminder that the future of the smart home might not be found in a $9,000 hub, but in software that actually respects the user’s control.
If you are looking to upgrade your home, my advice is to ignore the AI hype cycle for now. Instead of chasing expensive, unproven hubs, prioritize platforms that offer local control and broad interoperability. Look for systems that integrate your existing devices into a single, stable dashboard rather than adding another proprietary layer that might be obsolete in two years.
