Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has officially led the seed round for Runta, a startup focused on building a new execution layer for AI agents. According to an a16z blog post published on July 16, 2026, by Martin Casado, Yoko Li, and Guido Appenzeller, the firm has maintained a relationship with Runta CEO Guanlan for nearly a decade. While the primary source from a16z does not disclose the specific financial terms, X posts have corroborated that the investment is a $20 million seed round and that Martin Casado has joined the company’s board.

Beyond the Sandbox

The core thesis driving this investment is that current infrastructure is insufficient for the requirements of autonomous agents. As Casado writes in the a16z blog post,

The firm argues that agents require a complete OS install and a fully stateful environment, whether local or cloud-based, rather than the limited, ephemeral environments provided by existing sandboxing solutions.
