If you have ever spent twenty minutes untangling a charging cable from your robot vacuum’s brush roll, you know the current state of home robotics is far from autonomous. At IFA 2026 in Berlin, DJI introduced its ROMO 2 series, aiming to solve that specific frustration by porting drone-grade perception technology into a floor-cleaning chassis. The hardware is impressive, but the real story is how DJI is attempting to navigate a tightening global regulatory net.
The ROMO 2 lineup, consisting of the P2 and A2 models, relies on a perception stack derived from DJI’s aerial drones. By combining binocular fisheye vision sensors with wide-angle laser sensors, the robots achieve millimeter-level awareness. This means the vacuum can identify and navigate around objects as thin as 2mm, such as stray charging cables or pet training pads – a significant jump from the standard obstacle avoidance found in most current vacuums, which often require a larger physical footprint to trigger a sensor response.
The standout feature is what DJI calls concept transfer technology. Instead of relying solely on a pre-programmed database of known objects, the robot uses machine learning to generalize from past encounters. If it learns to avoid a specific type of cord, it applies that reasoning to other, unfamiliar objects that share similar physical characteristics. This mimics human-like reasoning, allowing the robot to adapt to a messy home environment without needing a software update every time you buy a new pair of shoes or leave a different toy on the floor.
Privacy remains the biggest hurdle for any camera-equipped home device, and DJI is addressing this with a new Local Data Mode, scheduled for Q4 2026. This feature allows users to sever the DJI Home app’s internet connection, ensuring that photos and video feeds never reach external servers. Users can also physically disable the camera and microphone or wipe stored data entirely. This is a direct response to the growing consumer demand for data sovereignty, particularly as users grow weary of cloud-based subscriptions and the potential for data leaks.
The competitive landscape for these devices has shifted dramatically over the last year. Following iRobot’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2025 and its subsequent acquisition by the China-based Shenzhen PICEA Robotics, the market is increasingly dominated by firms facing intense scrutiny. The US Federal Communications Commission has expanded its Covered List to include foreign-produced advanced robotic devices, effectively barring new models from receiving equipment authorization. Because DJI is headquartered in Shenzhen, the ROMO 2 is effectively locked out of the US market, despite its technical capabilities.
For European consumers, the barrier to entry is purely financial. The ROMO A2 starts at €1,199, while the P2, which includes a transparent base station, starts at €1,299. These prices place the ROMO 2 firmly in the premium segment of the market. While the hardware – including a 36,000 Pa suction rating and a LiDAR-guided mopping arm that swings 123 degrees to reach under furniture – is high-end, the price tag reflects the cost of integrating drone-grade sensors into a consumer appliance.
The ROMO 2 is a technical achievement that highlights the widening gap between what is possible in robotics and what is legally permissible in the US. DJI has built a machine that can navigate a home with the precision of a drone, but the regulatory environment means this technology will likely remain a regional luxury. For those in Europe, the choice comes down to whether the promise of superior obstacle avoidance and local data privacy is worth the four-figure investment. For the rest of the industry, the ROMO 2 serves as a reminder that even the most advanced AI agents are ultimately constrained by the geopolitical borders they operate within.
