What is Deepfake Fraud?
Deepfake fraud is a deceptive practice that uses AI-generated synthetic media—such as fake audio, video, or images—to impersonate real people. The goal is typically to trick individuals or organizations into handing over money, stealing sensitive identities, or manipulating people through social engineering. While deepfakes and synthetic media have legitimate, helpful uses in areas like entertainment and accessibility, their misuse for criminal activity has become a significant security concern.
The Digital Costume

Just as an actor might wear a mask or makeup to transform into a different character on stage, deepfake technology allows a bad actor to wear a digital mask of someone else. How Do Deepfakes Work?
At a basic level, deepfakes are created using advanced machine learning techniques like generative adversarial networks (GANs), autoencoders, or diffusion models. These systems are trained on small amounts of data—sometimes just a few minutes of sample footage—to learn and then clone a person’s specific voice, facial expressions, and unique mannerisms. Once the AI has learned these patterns, it can generate highly convincing, fake content that mimics the target.

The danger of this technology is not just theoretical. In a notable case, a finance worker at a multinational firm was tricked into transferring approximately $25 million to fraudsters. The attackers used deepfake technology to impersonate the company’s chief financial officer and other colleagues during a video conference call, making the request appear entirely legitimate.

The U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has issued an alert regarding fraud schemes involving deepfake media, noting a marked increase in suspicious activity reports. To protect yourself, look for common red flags: photos that appear internally inconsistent, the use of suspicious third-party webcam plugins, or a sudden refusal to use standard security measures like multifactor authentication. Additionally, performing a reverse-image search can sometimes reveal if a face matches known online galleries of AI-generated images.
