Visa + Lianlian LoopXPay: First Live B2B Agentic Transaction Hits Greater China

While consumer AI commerce remains stalled by trust deficits, the B2B sector is quietly moving from protocol signaling to actual, automated procurement.

The industry has spent the better part of this year obsessed with the idea of AI agents doing our shopping. We have seen the demos, the chat-based checkout experiments, and the endless white papers on agentic architecture. Yet, for the average consumer, the reality remains underwhelming. According to an April 2026 survey by Product.ai, only 14% of consumers trust AI to execute purchases without manual verification, and 42% refuse to let an agent handle anything over $25.

Against this backdrop of consumer hesitation, the B2B sector is beginning to look like the only place where agentic commerce actually functions. On July 24, 2026, Visa and Lianlian DigiTech announced the first live B2B agentic transaction in Greater China, executed by Lianlian’s LoopXPay AI agent. This was not a test of protocol signaling or a theoretical exercise in blockchain messaging. It was a functional, end-to-end procurement workflow.

The LoopXPay agent performed a series of tasks that would typically occupy a human procurement officer for hours. It sourced a product sample from a supplier, compared multiple suppliers based on pre-defined criteria, placed the order, and completed the payment. All of this occurred within a single automated workflow, governed by strict spending controls and approval parameters.

This is what Category 3 commerce — actual buyer-seller exchange — looks like when it moves beyond the hype. It is boring, functional, and highly regulated. It is also a stark contrast to the consumer space, where OpenAI scaled back its Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in March 2026 after finding that in-chat conversion rates were roughly one-third of those on traditional e-commerce sites.

The success of the LoopXPay transaction relies heavily on the infrastructure of trust. The agent is registered in Visa’s Agentic Directory, a verification registry introduced on June 10, 2026, alongside the Visa Trusted Agent Protocol (TAP). By providing a curated list of verified agents and merchants, Visa is attempting to solve the identity problem that plagues open-ended AI commerce.

The structural gap between B2B and consumer commerce is widening. While consumer-facing agents are largely relegated to search and discovery, B2B agents are handling the actual movement of money. A June 2026 report from Checkout.com highlights this disconnect: while 89% of merchants are preparing for agentic commerce and 42% are actively testing, only 3% have seen actual agent transactions.

The Visa-Lianlian collaboration also highlights a significant US-China bridge in fintech infrastructure. By integrating a Chinese fintech’s agent into a global payment network’s directory, the transaction demonstrates how agentic commerce might bypass the fragmented, siloed architectures currently competing for dominance.

We are currently watching three distinct architectures fight for the future of payments: the x402 Foundation’s crypto-native stablecoin settlement, Google’s UCP card-rails checkout, and Mastercard’s AP4M multi-rail approach. While the x402 Foundation launched on July 14, 2026, with 40 major members, it is worth noting that over 95% of its current transactions are protocol signaling rather than actual commerce.

The LoopXPay transaction serves as a reminder that the most significant developments in AI commerce may not happen in the chat windows of consumer apps. They are happening in the back offices of supply chains, where the stakes are higher, the rules are clearer, and the need for automation is far more pressing than the desire to have a chatbot order a pair of sneakers.

As we look ahead, the question is not whether agents can perform tasks, but whether they can do so reliably across different regulatory and payment environments. The B2B sector is providing the proof of concept that consumer commerce has yet to achieve. For now, the real action is in the ledger, not the interface.
