Apple and Google Used to Compete for Your Living Room. Now They Share a Brain.

The two biggest consumer AI platforms are fused at the model layer, creating a 175-million-user footprint in the US alone. Here's what changes — and who gets left out.

I spent most of last Tuesday morning yelling at my kitchen timer. My phone is an iPhone, but my kitchen speaker is a Google device. Usually, they do not talk to each other. But the landscape just shifted. Apple and Google, two companies that have spent years treating each other like rivals, have decided to share a brain.

The deal, announced back in January 2026, is a massive, multi-year collaboration. Apple’s next-generation Foundation Models are now built on Google’s Gemini technology. The Siri AI unveiled at WWDC in June is effectively running on the same engine as your Google Assistant. Two former competitors are now fused at the model layer.

A combined footprint of roughly 175 million users in the U.S. alone, and a global reach of 1.4 billion active Siri devices. Google’s new $99.99 Home Speaker, launched in late June, is the first audio device built specifically for Gemini, featuring on-device processing via a dedicated NPU that promises sub-100ms response times.

But this fused future is not arriving for everyone. If you live in the EU or China, you are currently on the outside looking in. Siri AI is blocked in those regions on iOS and iPadOS 27.

Amazon, for its part, is betting on a completely different model. Alexa+ launched in February at $19.99 a month, free if you are already a Prime member. Then there is the local-first crowd. Home Assistant, with over 650,000 active opt-in installations, is growing quietly without subscription rent or cloud-based surveillance.

None of this has moved the trust needle. A 2026 survey from Reviews.org shows that 63% to 65% of users are concerned about every major platform. Two giants fusing their intelligence has not made people feel better about having always-listening devices in the kitchen.
