But if you want to know which currency will actually power the next generation of machine-to-machine commerce, market cap is a distraction. The real story is hidden in the transaction volume, where USDC has quietly captured roughly 70% of adjusted stablecoin activity.
USDC is rapidly becoming the default settlement layer for the agent economy. The mechanism driving this shift is the x402 protocol. Introduced by Coinbase and now integrated into Stripe’s Base x402 and Google Cloud’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), x402 is an open HTTP payment standard designed specifically for machine-to-machine settlements. Crucially, it is USDC-only, leveraging EIP-3009 for gas-free, programmable transfers.
Visa’s Onchain Analytics, powered by Allium, uses an adjusted methodology that filters out the noise of bots, wash trading, and non-economic transactions. In this filtered, high-signal environment, USDC’s 70% dominance is the defining feature. In H1 2026, adjusted volume hit $8.82 trillion, already surpassing the total for the entire year of 2024.
The tilt toward USDC is being accelerated by the GENIUS Act and its Permitted Payment Stablecoin Issuer framework. Circle has secured a significant first-mover advantage, having received conditional OCC approval for a national trust bank charter in December 2025. This creates a compliance moat that other, less regulated issuers struggle to cross.
USDT and USDC are diverging into distinct utility tiers. USDT remains the king of the informal, retail-heavy remittance world. However, the agent economy requires a different set of features: regulatory certainty, institutional-grade compliance, and protocol-level integration. When a platform like Stripe or Google Cloud decides which currency to bake into their agent payment protocols, they are choosing the asset that minimizes their regulatory risk and maximizes their technical compatibility.
