HIVE Blockchain Technologies, a Vancouver-headquartered crypto mining company, is buying 1,800 machines from Chinese mining rig maker Bitmain to expand its mining operation.
Fast facts
- HIVE said that it had ordered 1,800 Antminer S19j Pro miners from Bitmain, and the new machines are expected to bring an aggregate hash power of 180 petahash per second, according to a company statement released Friday.
- HIVE — listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and Frankfurt Stock Exchange — operates data centers in Canada, Sweden and Iceland, and has been promoting its green energy and environment, sustainability and governance strategy.
- The purchase of the new machines are part of HIVE’s 2022 purchasing plan and they set to be delivered starting from January 2022 through June 2022.
- The new deal follows HIVE’s order earlier this month with another Chinese mining rig maker Canaan for 4,000 Bitcoin mining machines with an aggregate operating hash power of 272 petahash per second.
- “This purchase with Bitmain enables us to maintain our strategy to diversify the manufacturers we purchase from,” Frank Holmes, executive chairman of HIVE, said in the statement. “Over the past year, we have been expressing our concerns about global shortages in chips and logistics delays in shipping equipment from Asia due to Covid 19. We have deep relationships Bitmain, MicroBT and Canaan which are all top global manufacturers in our industry.”
