Crypto exchange Binance is launching a non-fungible token marketplace, auctioning NFTs of artworks by Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali.
Fast facts:
- Trading on the marketplace will begin at 10 a.m. local time in Singapore on June 24, with an auction entitled “Genesis,” featuring NFTs of Warhol’s “Three Self Portraits” and Dali’s “Divine Comedy: rebeget.” The auction will run for five days.
- Dali’s work has been redesigned to feature the Bitcoin symbol, the signature of Binance CEO Changpeng “C.Z.” Zhao and the Binance logo, visible only by digitally zooming in on the piece.
- The auction will run primarily on the Binance Smart Chain with support for the Ethereum network, allowing users to to view Ethereum NFTs in Binance wallets.
- In April, NFT marketplace OpenSeas removed an NFT of artist Jean Michael Basquiat’s work “Free Comb with Pagoda” after his estate confirmed the would-be seller did not own the copyright to the piece. While active, the sale had generated much controversy for giving the winning bidder the option to destroy the original physical drawing.
